WOMEN in STEM

Happy new year! I hope you all have a blast this holiday season.
I am sharing with you a website I follow.
This website is called STEM WOMEN. There’s one article where they feature a male professor  from UC DAvis and talks about the important roles women contribute in the STEM field. Referring to a university official who is the PI on UC Davis ADVANCE grant:

“She is deeply committed to top-down change so that postdocs and junior faculty and new people applying for jobs don’t have to make that part of their fight. It is in the interest of our institution to do this well so that we will get better scientists. People will be happier staying here and they will be more productive.
It does’t hurt to have voices from all over [speaking out on inequality], but it’s critically important that the tenured faculty- the Deans, the administrators, the government agencies, the journals, and the people with power who aren’t taking risks; that they do something about it”.

Postdoc women luncheon group to host a Career Chat on December 5

The KAWSE office would like to invite the postdoc luncheon group to host a Career Chat for graduate students at K-State.

This would be like a panel of postdocs and so we would like to know if you  are available for this activity.

This is an informal meet & greet / Q & A type of panel discussion. Normally, this Career Chats start with the host(s) – in this case, the postdoc(s) – spending a little bit of time talking about their experience as a woman in a male-dominated field, how they got to where they are today, what their career plans are, and then any tips or advice they would like to impart on the attendees – in this case, current K-State graduate students. Then the remainder of the time is spent allowing the attendees to ask any questions they may have, to get a little mentoring or career advice, and learn more about opportunities and career paths available to them. If you would like to participate in this activity, please send Sara Heiman an e-mail  at sjheiman@ksu.edu or  Janet Paper at paperjan@ksu.edu. Thank you.
